Complete Booklist for CLAT 2027
One of the most common mistakes students make during CLAT preparation is collecting far more study material than they can realistically complete. Between coaching modules, reference books, monthly current affairs compendiums, online lectures and practice papers, it is easy to become overwhelmed by resources rather than benefit from them.

One of the most common mistakes students make during CLAT preparation is collecting far more study material than they can realistically complete. Between coaching modules, reference books, monthly current affairs compendiums, online lectures and practice papers, it is easy to become overwhelmed by resources rather than benefit from them.
The objective of this article is simple: to give you a precise, section-wise list of books and resources you can follow for CLAT 2027. This is also a reference page for students watching our YouTube lecture, with all the books, free resources and supplementary material discussed in the video available in one place.

1. Current Affairs & General Knowledge
Current Affairs preparation requires a combination of consistency, selective reading and contextual understanding. Ideally, students should read a newspaper regularly, identify topics relevant to CLAT and prepare their own notes.
However, newspaper reading alone is not sufficient. We recommend using two complementary monthly compendiums: a concise compendium covering important examination-relevant developments and a more comprehensive compendium that provides additional information and contextual understanding.
The concise compendium should form the foundation of your preparation. Use the comprehensive compendium to supplement your notes, understand topics in greater depth and cover developments that may not have been included in your primary material.
Students who have not been following newspapers consistently can additionally refer to a weekly current affairs compendium instead of attempting to retrospectively read several months of newspapers.

2. Analytical Reasoning
For Analytical Reasoning, M.K. Pandey is a comprehensive reference book covering the theoretical concepts and practice questions required for preparation.
However, students should not attempt to complete the entire book indiscriminately. Focus on topics relevant to CLAT and use the book to strengthen your understanding through regular practice.
We have also provided a highlighted index identifying the chapters and topics you should prioritise.
Recommended Resources:

3. Quantitative Techniques
For Quantitative Techniques, we recommend two books: Objective Arithmetic by Rajesh Verma and Data Interpretation by K. Kundan.
Rajesh Verma is useful for strengthening fundamental arithmetic concepts, particularly percentages, ratios, proportions and other topics relevant to CLAT. K. Kundan provides extensive practice in Data Interpretation, which is particularly important for the passage-based questions encountered in the examination.
Both books should primarily be used for practice rather than cover-to-cover theoretical reading. Begin by attempting questions, identify the concepts you struggle with and then refer to the corresponding theoretical explanations.
Your priority should remain regular timed practice, sectional tests and revision.
Recommended Resources:
- Objective Arithmetic by Rajesh Verma
- Data Interpretation by K. Kundan
4. English Language & Reading Comprehension
English preparation for CLAT can broadly be divided into grammar, vocabulary, reading ability and reading comprehension.
For grammar, High School English Grammar and Composition by Wren & Martin remains a useful reference. Students should revise the concepts relevant to the examination rather than attempt to study every chapter in detail.
For improving reading ability, we recommend How to Read Better and Faster by Norman Lewis. The book can help students develop reading habits and improve their ability to process written material efficiently.
For vocabulary, Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis is a recognised reference. However, students who are already struggling to manage their preparation need not prioritise completing the entire book. A more targeted approach is to study our list of 500 important vocabulary words, understand their roots and maintain a personal vocabulary notebook while reading newspapers.
Students who have already developed a strong foundation in Reading Comprehension may also attempt higher-order questions from CAT or GMAT preparation material, preferably GMAT.
5. Critical Reasoning
Critical Reasoning does not necessarily require an extensive collection of reference books. While understanding different question types is important, improvement primarily comes through repeated practice, error identification and careful analysis.
Students who want additional theoretical explanations and challenging practice questions can refer to GMAT Critical Reasoning material. Beyond this, regular editorial exercises, sectional tests and mock analysis should form the foundation of your preparation.
6. Legal Reasoning
For Legal Reasoning, we recommend avoiding unnecessarily extensive reference books. CLAT does not require students to undertake the same depth of legal study as a law undergraduate.
The objective should be to develop a strong understanding of important legal principles and learn how to apply them accurately to passage-based questions.
CLAT Community's free Legal Reasoning lectures and textbooks cover the foundational material students need for their preparation.
7. Previous Year Questions & Sample Papers
Irrespective of the books you choose, previous year questions and sample papers should remain central to your CLAT preparation.
They help you understand the examination's question patterns, passage structures, recurring concepts and expected level of reasoning.
CLAT Community has compiled previous year question papers and sample papers in a single Google Drive folder. We have also converted these papers into online tests so students can attempt them under examination-like conditions.

A Final Word on Choosing Your CLAT Resources
The purpose of this booklist is not to encourage students to abandon resources they have already been following successfully.
If you have been consistently studying from a particular book or compendium and it is working for you, there is no reason to switch simply because another resource has been recommended.
Your preparation will ultimately depend far more on how effectively you use your resources than on how many resources you own.
Prioritise timed practice, regular sectional tests, mock examinations, detailed analysis and revision. Use textbooks to strengthen concepts where necessary, but do not allow theoretical preparation to consume time that should be devoted to applying what you have learned.
You can find additional free lectures, textbooks and preparation resources through CLAT Community.
